Christmas comes early at Sciphone!

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

So I know everyone’s probably busy with Holidays and family and what not, but I’ve been tinkering in the background preparing the next big thing for Sciphone. I’m pretty happy with the results, and I hope it will be a great help and resource for all you iPhone and iPod Touch owners out there.

In the next week or so, we’ll be rolling out the new Applications site :

http://www.nativeiphoneapps.com

We’re trying not to integrate it into the Sciphone interface, but instead create a whole different division. This will keep Sciphone pure and strictly about wallpapers, and if you’re looking for the latest and best applications, you can visit our applications website. We will be placing a link into the Sciphone navigation to make it easier for you to access the site.

So far, we have over 500+ applications added to the database, and we’ll continue to add to that number as new applications are released. If you have an application or know of one we don’t have in our database, you can submit applications through the site as well. We’ve tried to keep with the Sciphone mentality and make it as easy as possible for you to browse and access applications for your iPhone and iPod Touch.

As I said before, I’m not sure when we’ll have the link online and operational, just thought I’d mention it because I couldn’t keep it secret anymore. We’ll just say an official launch will take place December 25th, 2007. Christmas present for all the Sciphone users!

Also, I wanted to let you guys know that starting next month, we’re going to be switching how the Cash Out Rewards works. Because not everyone can upload wallpapers to the site everyday, it’s not very fair to those who have jobs or family or anything else to deal with. I’m leaning towards a milestone rewards where users can cash out once they hit specific milestones on the site.

At this moment I don’t have all the details, but I’ll work it out and keep you guys updated. For this month’s end though, we’ll keep with the “top 3 uploader” rules. Stay tuned!

iFuntastic 4.7.1 with iTunes 7.5 (and iPhone 1.1.2) Support

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

The latest version of iFuntastic 4.7.1 has been released. The iPhone customization/jailbreaking software is now shareware for many of the advanced features. Release notes:

- support for iTunes 7.5
- fixed text display for Leopard
- improved email procedure
- fixed alignment bug for Home Screen backgrounds
- a ‘Small Icons’ choice for the (advanced) Home Screen
- fixed ‘vanishing iPod icon’ bug
- a ‘News’ page for up-to-date info about updates bugs and more
- a ‘Make Executable’ function in the File Manager item popup menu

The latest version of iFuntastic allows users to jailbreak their 1.0.2, 1.1.1, and 1.1.2 iPhones, and also provide other customization options. There are directions on how to Jailbreak a 1.1.2 iPhone for free, but some may find this solution more convenient.

Unlocked iPhones to be sold in Germany

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

To be in compliance with a court ruling, Deutsche Telekom announced today that they will immediately start selling an unlocked iPhone without contract for 999 euro (US $1,477). The iPhone will still be sold, as before, with 2 year contract for 399 euro ($US $590).
Bloomberg reports that customers who purchased the iPhone in Germany after November 19th may have their iPhone unlocked for free. Existing German iPhone customers can reportedly also receive the unlock for a fee.
Prior to this, the only unlocked iPhones in existence have been “hacked” with 3rd party applications. This introduces legitimate unlocked iPhones into the marketplace that will presumably withstand future iPhone software updates.

BBC introduces iPhone-friendly podcast site

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

The idea of Listening to live podcasts on your iPhone is pretty awesome; I think it’s possibly the closest you can get to filling the void left by live radio. And the BBC’s just made it even easier to do by introducing a nifty site for navigating much of their audio content with an iPhone-friendly site.By firing up Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch, you can just head over to BBC Podcasts, and you’ll be presented with several options for navigating the BBC’s content in an easy to use, iPhone-style hierarchical fashion. Browse by channel, by genre, or alphabetically. Selecting any podcast will show you a list of recent episodes, along with a short synopsis of each, and the ability to hit play right there and listen. Obviously, it works somewhat smoother on Wi-Fi than on EDGE, though according to the BBC Radio Labs, the team at the Beeb is working on tweaking the setup for EDGE. But if you ask me, it’s a very good start.
